IL PAESE DEGLI UOMINI INTEGRI

SINOSSI

È l'ottobre 2014, la capitale del Burkina Faso Ouagadougou è teatro di manifestazioni di massa contro una dittatura al potere da 27 anni. Un’insurrezione non armata caccia il dittatore e resiste ad un successivo tentativo di colpo di stato.

Nel 2015 il Paese vota liberamente per la prima volta nella sua storia, ma a questa rivoluzione non segue un cambiamento del regime di sfruttamento economico del Paese da parte delle compagnie straniere.

Oggi, la debolezza del governo sta favorendo l’avanzamento di Al Qaeda e ISIS, che negli ultimi mesi hanno messo sotto attacco la regione causando migliaia di vittime e centinaia di migliaia di sfollati. 

Il film segue questo processo nell’arco temporale di cinque anni attraverso la vita quotidiana, fatta di resistenza e lotta, di quattro burkinabè. Un musicista rivoluzionario, un ingegnere candidato alle elezioni, un minatore disoccupato per via del suo impegno politico e una madre in una famiglia povera e numerosa della capitale Ouagadougou. Tutti accomunati da una speranza di cambiamento che si condensa nell’importante scadenza elettorale dell’ottobre 2020.

PERCHÉ CI SERVE IL TUO SOSTEGNO

Per noi europei, l’Africa è ormai da anni sinonimo di “migrazione”. Un continente la cui narrazione troppo spesso è circoscritta al fenomeno degli sbarchi e contemporaneamente tratta i temi politico/sociali alla loro base come qualcosa che non ci riguarda.

Nel 2017 gli africani che sono emigrati clandestinamente verso l'Europa sono solo lo 0,1% della popolazione, ovvero quella piccola parte che ha i mezzi economici per lasciare il continente, seppure nelle condizioni drammatiche che conosciamo.

Il rovescio di questa medaglia è un’Africa che non può emigrare. Che non vuole emigrare. Un’Africa che lotta quotidianamente con dignità e coraggio per affermarsi e costruire un futuro diverso. Un’Africa ostacolata dai nostri interessi, che hanno bisogno di tenerla povera, sottomessa, neo colonizzata.

Questo film vuole narrare questo aspetto quasi inesplorato. C’è un Paese, il Burkina Faso – che tradotto in italiano significa “Il Paese degli uomini integri” – che nel 2014 è insorto contro una dittatura al potere da 27 anni. Un anno dopo ha resistito ad un colpo di stato del vecchio regime e ha finalmente votato democraticamente per la prima volta nella sua storia nel 2015. Nonostante questo, il Paese è rimasto nella morsa dello sfruttamento economico delle imprese straniere, che estraggono le sue risorse senza lasciare alcun beneficio alla popolazione.

A questo si aggiunge il proclama dell’Isis che ha recentemente dichiarato il territorio come la nuova sede dello Stato Islamico. Solo nell'ultimo anno il terrorismo ha fatto oltre 1.000 vittime, 500.000 sfollati e causato la chiusura di gran parte delle scuole, lasciando 300.000 studenti senza più formazione.

Ho seguito questo processo sin dal 2014 e con questo film voglio raccontare la lotta e la vita quotidiana di un popolo, attraverso gli esempi di quattro persone: un musicista rivoluzionario, un ingegnere candidato alle elezioni, un minatore disoccupato per via del suo impegno politico e una madre in una famiglia povera e numerosa della capitale Ouagadougou. 

Un coro di voci che ci mostra l’altra Africa, sapientemente tenuta lontana dalle cronache, poiché inconciliabile con una narrazione che parla di “emergenza” e punta i riflettori sugli effetti delle nostre politiche, ignorando sistematicamente le cause, come il cambiamento climatico, lo sfruttamento minerario, commerciale ed economico. 

Per cambiare le cose bisogna prima di tutto cambiare la narrazione. Per questo siamo qui a chiedere il tuo contributo per terminare questo film. Con il tuo sostegno potremo tornare in Burkina Faso entro la fine del 2020, anno in cui la popolazione burkinabè dovrebbe, almeno in teoria, tornare alle urne. Potremo coprire i costi di post-produzione del film, e avviarne la distribuzione.

NOTE DI REGIA

Nel 2015 ho realizzato un primo lavoro che raccontava l’insurrezione popolare e la successiva transizione. Un documentario per la TV con lo stile classico del reportage (allego qui sotto i link per vederlo). Quel lavoro aveva un approccio “oggettivo” sui fatti e non era guidato dai personaggi ma dagli accadimenti e, attraverso una voce off, da una riflessione sugli stessi.

Ho parallelamente seguito e filmato nei successivi 4 anni quattro personaggi che sono al centro del film che stiamo realizzando. Il film sarà costruito attraverso due punti di vista diversi: il mio, nell’azione filmata durante l’insurrezione, e successivamente quello dei quattro personaggi, incontrati durante la manifestazione e seguiti successivamente nella loro vita quotidiana. Al mio racconto in prima persona si sostituirà man mano il loro racconto, in una progressiva dissolvenza di voci. L'intenzione è quella di unire una visione esterna ed estranea delle grandi questioni alla base delle ingiustizie economiche e sociali che causano l’emigrazione africana, la mia appunto, ad una interna, personale ed intima, di persone che attraversano la storia spesso senza avere voce in capitolo, anche solo per essere visti come persone, non come numeri e dati.

Mi sono posto prima come “strumento” della narrazione e poi come “ascoltatore” interessato, cercando se possibile di sfuggire allo stereotipo e di raccontare quell’Africa che sfugge sapientemente alle narrazioni mainstream e che, se mostrata, potrebbe essere la chiave di volta di un vero cambiamento storico. Un tentativo ambizioso e necessario che il film intraprende con coscienza dei propri limiti ma anche con la necessaria sfrontatezza e incoscienza.

COME IMPIEGHEREMO I SOLDI RACCOLTI

Abbiamo già ben 6 tornate di riprese effettuate tra il 2014 il 2019 con il sostegno di ICTV e Indyca, due società di produzione, una francese e l’altra italiana. E dell’Università Roma Tre, che ha aiutato con attrezzature e logistica.

Il budget complessivo del film è di circa 100.000 euro, ma ce ne servono circa 30.000 per le spese necessarie per concluderlo.

Queste spese contemplano delle fee minime e simboliche per il gruppo di persone che ci lavorano, sono soprattutto costi di riprese (viaggi, vitto e alloggio) e costi di montaggio, post, mix, color, ecc.

Christian Carmosino Mereu (regista)

Nato a Ventimiglia nel 1972, laureato in cinema, da circa 20 anni organizza eventi cinematografici in Italia e all’estero. Ha lavorato al Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia - Cineteca Nazionale e come selezionatore per diversi festival. Dal 2005 è responsabile tecnico del Centro Produzione Audiovisivi dell’Università Roma Tre e docente di Filmmaking e Cinematografia Documentaria. Come regista ha realizzato cortometraggi e documentari che hanno ottenuto numerosi riconoscimenti nazionali e internazionali.

LAND OF UPRIGHT PEOPLE

SYNOPSIS

October 2014, the capital of Burkina Faso Ouagadougou is the scene of mass demonstrations against a dictatorship in power for 27 years. An unarmed uprising kicks off the dictator and subsequently resists to a coup attempt.

In 2015 the country votes freely for the first time in its history, but the revolution is not followed by a real change, especially regarding economic exploitation of the country by foreign companies.

Today the weakness of the government allows the advancement of Al Qaeda and ISIS, which has put the region under attack causing thousands of victims and hundreds of thousands of displaced people.

The film follows this process during five years through daily life of four burkinabes made up of resistance and struggle. An engaged musician, a candidate for elections, a miner who is unemployed because of his political commitment, and a mother in a poor and numerous family in the capital Ouagadougou. All of them share a hope for change that is concentrated in the important October 2020 polls’ deadline.

WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

For us, Europeans, Africa has always been associated with "migration". A continent whose narration is too often limited to the phenomenon of landings and at the same time treats political / social issues at their base as something that does not concern us.

In 2017 Africans who emigrated illegally to Europe were only 0.1% of the population, and they are the small part of the population with the economic means to leave the continent, even in the dramatic conditions we know.

The flip side of this coin is an Africa that cannot emigrate. Who does not want to emigrate. An Africa that struggles daily with dignity and courage to succeed and build a better future. An Africa hampered by our interests, which need to keep it poor, submissive, neo-colonized.

This film aims to tell this almost unexplored aspect. There is a country, Burkina Faso - which translated into English means "The Land of Upright People" - which in 2014 arose against a dictatorship in power for 27 years. A year later resisted a coup by the old regime and finally voted democratically for the first time in its history in 2015. Despite this, the country has remained in the grip of economic exploitation of foreign companies, which extract its resources without leaving any benefit to the population.

In addition there is the ISIS proclamation which recently declared the region as the new seat of the Islamic State. Just in the last year terrorism has made over 1,000 victims, 500,000 displaced and caused the closure of most schools, leaving 300,000 students without instruction.

I have been following this process since 2014 and with this film I aim to tell the struggle and daily life of burkinabè people, through the examples of four citizens: a revolutionary musician, an engineer who’s candidate in the elections, an miner unemployed because of his political commitment, and a mother in a poor and numerous family in the capital Ouagadougou.

A chorus of voices that shows us the other Africa, wisely kept away from the news, since irreconcilable with a narrative that tells of "emergency" and puts the spotlight on the effects of our policies, systematically ignoring the causes, such as climate change, mining, commercial and economic exploitation.

In order to change things we must first change the narrative. This is why we ask for your contribution in order to finish this film. With your support we may go back to Burkina Faso by the end of 2020, the year in which the Burkinabe population should, at least in theory, return to polls. We would be able to cover the post-production costs of the film and start distribution.

DIRECTOR'S NOTES

In 2015 I made a first film: a chronicle of the popular uprising and the subsequent transition. A TV documentary with the classic style of reportage (links to watch it below). That work had an "objective" approach to the facts, it was not guided by characters but by the events and a reflection on them, through a voice over.

In parallel, I have followed and filmed over the years four characters that are the center of the film. The film will be constructed through two different points of view: mine, in the action filmed during the insurrection, and subsequently that of the four characters, met during the event and followed later in their daily life. My narration will be replaced little by little by their story, in a progressive fading of voices. The intention is to unite my external and extraneous vision of the great questions underlying the economic and social injustices that cause African emigration, with the internal, personal and intimate one of people which are often not being involved, or even not seen as people, but numbers and data.

At first I placed myself as the "mean" of the story and then as an interested "listener", possibly trying to escape the stereotypes and to tell an Africa that escapes mainstream narrations. An Africa, if shown, that could be the keystone of a real historical change. This film undertakes an ambitious and necessary attempt with awareness of its own limits, but also with the necessary boldness and recklessness.

HOW WE WILL USE THE COLLECTED MONEY

We already have 6 shootings sessions made between 2014 and 2019, realized with the support of ICTV, Indyca, two production companies, one French the other Italian. And University of Roma 3, which helped with equipments and facilities.

The film's total budget is around 100,000 euros, but we need about 30,000 for the expenses necessary to complete it.

These costs include minimum and symbolic fees for the group of people who offer their work, that are mainly shootings costs (travel and lodging) and editing costs, post, mix, color, etc.

WHO WE ARE

Christian Carmosino Mereu (director)

Italian independent filmmaker Christian Carmosino (born May 8th, 1972) has worked in Italy, Europe and Africa for the past twenty years as a director, producer and teacher.  

Christian won international acclaim with short films and documentaries such as “Quién es Pilar?” and “L’ora d’amore”. His documentary L’ora d’amore (The Love Hour, 2018, 52’) - recounting prisoners’ complex relation with love - has been screened in more than 30 festivals all over the world after its premiere at Roma International Film Festival and was awarded in Italy and abroad. His earlier work Pierino (2004, 15’) marked the beginning of Christian’s interest in social issues, a passion that still drives his main works today. His most recent films are “Pieds nus” (Barefoot Revolution, 2015, 52’) that recounts Burkina Faso’s 2014 uprising and youth pressure for political change and marked the start of a renewed interest in Africa’s present and future, “La lunga strada gialla” (The Long yellow Road, 2016, 79’) that recounts the trip by mule of two Italian environment activists through South of Italy, this film was screened in many festivals and got the Prize “Environment and Society” at Torino CinemAmbiente – International Environmental Film Festival, and Kobarid (2019, 100’), his last work collecting memories of the First World War soldiers.

He currently works as the coordinator of the Film Production Center of  Roma Tre University and teaches filmmaking at regular courses.

LE PAYS DES HOMMES INTÈGRES

SYNOPSIS

C'est l’octobre du 2014, la capitale du Burkina Faso, Ouagadougou, est le théâtre des manifestations de masse contre une dictature au pouvoir depuis 27 ans. Un soulèvement non armé chasse le dictateur et résiste à une tentative de coup d'État.

En 2015, le pays vote librement pour la première fois dans son histoire, mais à cette révolution ne suit pas le changement attendu dans le régime d'exploitation économique du pays mené par les entreprises étrangères. 

Aujourd'hui, la fragilité du gouvernement favorise l'avancement d'Al-Qaïda et de l'État islamique qui, dans ces derniers mois, ont attaqué la région faisant des milliers de victimes et des centaines de milliers de personnes déplacées.

Le film suit ce processus pendant une période de cinq ans à travers le regard sur la vie quotidienne, faite de résistance et de luttes, de quatre burkinabés. Musicien révolutionnaire, candidat aux élections, mineur au chômage à cause de son engagement politique, et mère d'une famille pauvre et nombreuse de la capitale Ouagadougou. Tous unis par un espoir commun de changement qui se condense dans l'importante échéance électorale d’octobre prochain.

POURQUOI NOUS AVONS BESOIN DE VOTRE SOUTIEN

Pour nous Européens, l'Afrique est depuis des années synonyme de «migration». Un continent dont la narration se limite trop souvent au seul phénomène des débarquements, et qui, au même temps, montre les questions politiques / sociales à leur base comme quelque chose qui ne nous concerne pas.  

En 2017, les Africains qui ont émigré illégalement en Europe ne représentent que 0,1% de la population, c’est-à-dire la petite partie qui possède les moyens économiques de quitter le continent, même dans les conditions dramatiques que nous connaissons.  Le revers de cette médaille c’est une Afrique qui ne peut pas émigrer. Qui ne veut pas émigrer. Une Afrique qui lutte chaque jour avec dignité et courage pour s’affirmer et construire un futur différent. Une Afrique freinée par nos intérêts, qui veulent la garder toujours pauvre, soumise, néo-colonisée.

Ce film veut raconter ces aspects presque inexplorés : il y a un pays, le Burkina Faso - qui traduit en italien signifie «La terre des hommes intègres » - qui s'est révolté en 2014 contre une dictature au pouvoir depuis 27 ans. Un an plus tard, il a résisté au coup d'État de l'ancien régime et il a finalement voté démocratiquement pour la première fois dans son histoire en 2015. Malgré cela, le pays est resté sous l'emprise de l'exploitation économique des entreprises étrangères, qui extraient ses ressources sans laisser aucun bénéfice à la population autochtone.  

À cela s'ajoute la proclamation de l'ISIS qui a récemment établi le territoire comme nouveau siège de l'État islamique. Cette dernière année le terrorisme a fait plus de 1 000 victimes, 500 000 personnes déplacées, et provoqué la fermeture de la plupart des écoles, laissant 300 000 élèves sans formation.  

Je suis ce processus depuis 2014 et avec ce film je veux raconter la lutte et la vie quotidienne d'un peuple entier, à travers les exemples de quatre personnes: un musicien révolutionnaire, un ingénieur candidat aux élections, un mineur sans emploi à cause de son engagement politique et une mère seule dans une famille pauvre et nombreuse de la capitale Ouagadougou.

Un chœur de voix qui nous montre l'autre Afrique, sagement tenue à l'écart de l'actualité, inconciliable avec un récit qui parle «d'urgence» et met en lumière les effets de nos politiques, en ignorant systématiquement les causes, comme le changement climatique, l’exploitation minérale, commerciale et économique.  

Pour changer les choses, nous devons d'abord changer leur narration.

NOTES DU REALISATEUR

En 2015, j'ai fait un premier film sur ce sujet: une chronique du soulèvement populaire et de la transition qui a immédiatement suivi. Un documentaire télévisé en classique style-reportage (liens pour le regarder attaché ci-dessous). 

Cette oeuvre avait une approche «objective» des faits, elle n'était pas guidée par des personnages, mais plutồt par les événements et par une réflexion sur eux, grâce à l’instrument de la voix off.   En parallèle, j'ai suivi et filmé au fil des années. 

Mon nouveau film sera construit à travers deux points de vue différents: tout d’abord  le mien, au centre de l’action pendant les jours de la révolte, et puis celui des quatre personnages. Ma narration sera remplacée peu à peu par leur histoire, dans une « passage de témoin » progressive des voix. 

L'intention est de mettre en place et de combiner ma vision externe et étrangère des grands enjeux et des causes économiques et sociales qui provoquent l'émigration africaine, avec celle personnelle, interne et intime de ces personnes, qui trop souvent ne sont pas prises en considération, ou pire, qui ne sont pas considérés des êtres humains mais seulement chiffres ou données.  

Je me suis placé d'abord comme le «méchant» du récit et seulement après comme un «auditeur» intéressé, essayant, peut-être, d'échapper aux stéréotypes et de raconter une Afrique habilement capable d’échapper aux narrations traditionnels. Une Afrique, si elle est montrée, qui pourrait être la clé de voûte d'un véritable changement historique. 

Ce film entreprend une tentative ambitieuse et nécessaire avec la conscience de ses propres limites, mais aussi avec le courage et l'audace nécessaires.

COMMENT NOUS UTILISERONS L'ARGENT RECUEILLI

Nous avons déjà 6 session de tournages réalisés entre 2014 et 2019 en Burkina Faso avec le soutien d'ICTV et d'Indyca, deux sociétés de production, l'une française et l'autre italienne. Et grace à l'Université des études Roma3, qui nous a aidé avec l'équipement et la logistique.

Le budget total du film est d'environ 100 000 euros, mais nous avons besoin d'environ 30 000 pour les frais nécessaires à sa réalisation.

Ces coûts comprennent les frais minimaux et symboliques pour le groupe de personnes qui y travaillent, ce sont principalement les frais de tournage (voyage, pension et logement) et les frais de montage, post-production, mix, couleur, etc.

Vos contributions seront réparties comme il suit:

Assemblage et post-production: 30%

Tournage 25%

Organisation: 25%

Direction et musique: 15%

Commission de la plateforme: 5%

RÉCOMPENSES

Vous pouvez donner n'importe quel montant, mais nous avons également pensé à vous dédommager avec des avantages (récompenses) en fonction de votre don, voici la liste:

10 EUROS: votre nom apparaîtra au générique

15 EUROS: votre nom apparaîtra au générique et vous serez invité à la soirée de présentation du film à Rome (billet gratuit pour regarder la projection)

20 EUROS: vous recevrez le lien pour la visualisation gratuite du film, votre nom apparaîtra au générique

25 EUROS: vous recevrez le lien pour la visualisation gratuite du film, vous serez invité à la soirée de présentation du film à Rome (1 billet gratuit pour regarder la projection), votre nom apparaîtra au générique

50 EUROS: vous recevrez le lien pour la visualisation gratuite du film, vous serez invité à la soirée de présentation du film à Rome (2 billets gratuits pour regarder la projection), votre nom se traduira par des remerciements spéciaux

100 EUROS: vous recevrez le lien pour la visualisation gratuite du film, vous serez invité à la soirée de présentation du film à Rome (2 billets gratuits pour regarder la projection), votre nom se traduira par des remerciements spéciaux

350 EUROS: vous pouvez organiser une projection publique du film, en plus des récompenses précédentes

500 EUROS: vous pouvez organiser une projection publique du film en présence du réalisateur, en plus des contreparties précédentes

1000 EUROS: vous entrerez dans la production associée du film, votre nom et votre logo apparaîtront dans les titres des films et dans tous les supports de presse et communication sociale

5.000 EUROS ET AU-DELÀ: vous devenez coproducteur du film proportionnellement au budget global de celui-ci (fixé à 100 mille euros), votre nom et votre logo apparaîtront dans les génériques d'ouverture et de clôture du film et dans tous les supports de presse et communication sociale, vous participerez au partage des bénéfices (recettes nettes possibles) de la vente et de la distribution du film.

QUI NOUS SOMMES

Christian Carmosino Mereu (realizateur)

Le cinéaste indépendant italien Christian Carmosino (né le 8 mai 1972) travaille depuis vingt ans en Italie, en Europe et en Afrique en tant que réalisateur, producteur et enseignant.

Christian a gagné une renommée internationale avec des courts métrages et des documentaires tels que «Quién es Pilar?» Et «L’ora d’amore». 

Son documentaire «L'ora d'amore» (The Love Hour, 2018, 52 ') - retraçant la relation complexe des prisonniers avec l'amour - a été projeté dans plus de 30 festivals internationaux après sa première au Roma International Film Festival et il a été récompensé en Italie et à l'étranger. Son œuvre antérieure Pierino (2004, 15 ’) a marqué le début de l’intérêt de Christian pour les questions sociales, une passion qui anime encore aujourd'hui ses œuvres. Ses films les plus récents sont: «Pieds nus» (Barefoot Revolution, 2015, 52 ') qui retrace le soulèvement du Burkina Faso en 2014 et la pression des jeunes pour un changement politique et a marqué le début d'un intérêt pour le présent et l'avenir de l'Afrique,  «La lunga strada gialla» (The Long yellow Road, 2016, 79 ') qui raconte le voyage à dos de mulet de deux militants écologistes italiens à travers le sud de l'Italie. Ce film a été projeté dans nombreux festivals et a obtenu le prix «Environnement et société» au Torino CinemAmbiente - International Environmental Film Festival, et Kobarid (2019, 100 '), son dernier ouvrage rassemblant les souvenirs des soldats de la Première Guerre mondiale.
